Sons and Friends of Xavier,
Greetings from 16th Street! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Xavier High School website. Whether you are a prospective student or parent, current student or parent, an alumnus or just a curious seeker, I welcome you to a glimpse of the Xavier experience. I hope that within these pages you catch a sense of the spirit that has loomed large in Manhattan for 178 years.
Since 1847, Xavier has been educating young men in the Jesuit tradition—a tradition that stretches back to 1548, when St. Ignatius of Loyola first printed his book of Spiritual Exercises. In the centuries since, schools like ours have provided academically rigorous programs in order to encourage our students to seek and know God in all things. Ours is a tradition that is rooted in a deep and abiding commitment to faith and an earnest and demanding search for where God calls us to be.
Today, you will find Xavier brimming with energy in the heart of Manhattan—an energy that pushes our students to expand their worldview and challenges their minds and bodies as they strive to become men of competence, conscience, and compassion. Our young men become part of a community that encourages being open to growth, intellectual, loving, religious, and committed to doing justice.
We hope this website gives you a sense of what we offer—strong academics; a wide variety of activities, retreats, sacraments, service, and sports; freedom and boundaries; a deep concern for each and every student. At our core, we exist to both deepen and broaden our students’ strengths within the context of a brotherhood that matters. We hope you’ll join us on that transformative journey.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Kim Smith
