Father Chojnacki was born on November 7, 1943, and entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, New York, on August 14, 1961 following his graduation from Brooklyn Prep. Over the years he served in a variety of apostolates. He was a member of the faculty and administration at the Colegio San Ignacio in Puerto Rico, rector of the philosophate at Ciszek Hall at Fordham University, and a popular spiritual director who accompanied many through the Spiritual Exercises. Along with Fr. D. Michael Flynn, S.J., a driving force behind the Xavier Higher Achievement Program (HAP) who was called home to the Lord earlier this year, Fr. Chojnacki was a founder of EPNE, a mobile pastoral leadership training program for the Hispanic community.
During his time as provincial, Fr. Chojnacki was a source of steady leadership for the province through often complicated times. With the provincials from New England and Maryland, he brought the work of the Jesuit Collaborative into being in 2006. Over the last six years the Collaborative has done wonderful work promoting the Exercises, forming leaders rooted in Ignatian Spiritually and evangelizing the Church. He was deeply committed to the work of Cristo Rey New York and the New York Nativities and worked passionately to read the signs of the times so the Society could best respond to the needs of God’s people, particularly the poor and immigrant communities. Under Fr. Chojnacki’s leadership, the Centro Altagracia was formed to support the development of the Dominican community in New York City.
In addition to his service on the Xavier board, Fr. Chojnacki served on a number of boards through the years including the Nativity Mission Center, the Center of Concern in Washington, D.C. and the Woodstock Theological Center. As provincial, Fr. Chojnacki took part in the 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus which elected Adolfo Nicolas as the 30th Superior General of the Society.
There will be a mass for Fr. Chojnacki after school at 2:45 PM on Thursday, November 8 in the student chapel. Fr. Jack Replogle, S.J. ’51 will be our celebrant, with a reflection offered by Mr. Raslowsky.
