Xavier Takes Series Against Regis
January 22’s Xavier-Regis tripleheader, held on 16th Street, was the latest in the longstanding sports rivalry between the two Jesuit schools.
Approximately 750 fans poured into the gym over the course of the night to cheer on their teams.
The Xavier community overcrowded the bleachers on the east side, stood shoulder to shoulder on the stage, and filled every corner—while Regis fans fit as many people as humanly possible in the west bleachers.
The match-ups began in front of the sold-out crowd, with the Xavier freshmen dropping a close Game 1 by a final score of 46-43. Following the freshmen, the JV squad found itself on the winning end of Game 2, with a 50-47 victory.
In the rubber match, the varsity Knights routed the Raiders, 66-50. The Knights jumped out to an early lead, and set the pace for the rest of the game. Sophomore point guard Noel Karameros ’18 controlled the tempo, big man Malik Fisher ’17 held things down in the paint, while shooting guard Christian Raslowsky ’16 kept the Raiders honest from beyond the arc.
As always, the atmosphere was electric. The witty banter between student sections, mascot showdowns, and school spirit motivated the players and coaches.
Fans with connections and allegiance to both schools, dubbed the “Knight Owls”—including Xavier President Jack Raslowsky, father of Christian ’16 and John (Regis ’14)—gathered together for a photo op at halftime of the varsity game.
The night was a great success, and we look forward to the rest of the season.
