Faces of Xavier: Carmela Barbieri P'10
Carmela Barbieri P'10 may be new to the Xavier staff, but she's a veteran member of the Xavier family. As the wife of Michael Barbieri '80 P'10 and mother of Peter Barbieri '10, a former Xavier alumni volunteer, she has attended countless school events over the years. Now, she brings her friendly personality and easy familiarity with 16th Street to her new role, where she serves as the ultimate face of Xavier—greeting guests, answering phones, and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the school reception area.
The Xavier E-News sat down with Mrs. Barbieri to learn more about her, her family, and her goals for the future.
Xavier E-News: What is your first memory of Xavier?
Carmela Barbieri: My first memory of Xavier was attending the football awards dinner in the gym in December 1979. My boyfriend at the time, who is now my husband, was varsity co-captain.
Xavier E-News: What drew you to work at Xavier?
Carmela Barbieri: I have always been around the school. My husband was a student, coach, and still has close ties to the football program. He has also worked closely with Director of Development Mark Mongelluzzo. My son was a student and then an alumni volunteer at Xavier. I have always had close ties here. I always felt a sense of family when I was around the school.
Xavier E-News: How have your first few weeks been?
Carmela Barbieri: The six weeks that I have been here have been great. Everyone has been so nice and helpful. It is exactly what I expected.
Xavier E-News: What are your goals for your first year at Xavier?
Carmela Barbieri: I just want to fit in. I also want people walking through the doors of Xavier to be greeted by a smiling face. I want them to know that they are welcome and hope to let them know they are in a special place. I also hope to assist the administration in any way I can.
Xavier E-News: Being the wife and mother of alumni, what is it that makes Xavier special to you and your family?
Carmela Barbieri: Once you are part of the Xavier family, you are always part of the Xavier family. Xavier never forgets their own.
