Sports Update: Varsity Track and Field Wins Sectional and City Title

By Billy Malewich '12

The varsity track and field team has continuously raised the bar for their success over the years. This indoor season has been no exception, as they won their third indoor sectional and city title in as many years on January 29. The athletes stepped up and put on impressive displays on the track as Xavier had both individual sectional champions and teams winning titles.

The day got off to the right start as Dorian Ryan '18 took the sectional 55-meter dash title and qualified for the city final. Up next was the distance crew that saw three runners run 10 minutes or faster as Giancarlo Cipri '17, Gwyn Rowsom ’18, and Aidan Donahue ’18 collected eight city and sectional points, finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively. The A and B 4x200 teams scored big in the sectional final, and Xavier racked up seven points in the 1000 meters as Josef Oettl ‘18 and Patrick Norako ‘17 both scored (1st and 5th). Xavier scored seven points in the 1600 meters, seven points in the 4x800 (1st and 5th), and seven points in the 4x200 final. Patrick Heaney ’18 earned a point in the varsity shot put competition as well to help Xavier. Michael Crorkin ’18 stepped up and had a big day as he took second place in the 800-meter run and first place in the 600-meter run to help the team lock up the championship.

The freshmen and sophomores will have their opportunity to fight for an intersectional title when they compete this Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. The varsity will go for the intersectional title on February 11 at the same location. For all information related to Xavier track, click here.
