Sports Update: Three Xavier Students Selected for Play Rugby USA Winter Training Camp
By Billy Malewich ‘12
Rugby has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States for a number of reasons, but it has been a staple at Xavier since 1976.
Known nationally as one of the best high school programs in the nation, Xavier has formed collegiate All-Americans at numerous schools, including powerhouses like the University of California at Berkeley, Pennsylvania State University, and St. Joseph’s University. Xavier produces some of the nation's best high school athletes, and that is evident with three of our own being invited to the Play Rugby USA High School All American Winter Rugby Training Camp.
The four-day camp in Phoenix, Arizona, will take place at the end of the month and give Michael Queijo ’18, Nathan Salter '19, and Thomas Treussard ’18 the opportunity to grow as rugby players and compete against some of the top high school talent in the nation. Queijo noted, “For someone who loves the sport as much as I do, it is an amazing opportunity to challenge myself and compete at the highest level of the game.” Salter added: “This has made me realize that there are opportunities that you need to take advantage of. Performing to high standards is just giving back to the sport, as it has given me so much already.”
The camp features first-class facilities where athletes can train, recover, and be students of the game. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to join this league of elite players and represent Xavier on the nation’s top rugby program alongside my brothers," Treussard said.
Good luck to all three men as they represent Xavier with honor and distinction. Click here for all information pertaining to Xavier Rugby.
