Jesuit Schools Unite to Combat Hunger
Xavier is partnering with Fordham Prep, Loyola School, Regis High School, and Saint Peter’s Prep in the Great Ignatian Challenge, an effort to maximize the power of our traditional Thanksgiving food drives. There's competition involved, too: An anonymous donor, inspired by the existing food drives at each of the Jesuit institutions, has pledged $250,000 toward financial aid at the five schools. The gift, intended to further inspire the spirit of giving among the student bodies, will be awarded to each school based on the average amount of food collected per student. Xavier's contributions benefit the Xavier Mission of the Church of St. Francis Xavier.
Our goal is to feed 200 families this holiday season, amounting to approximately 5-6 items per student. Xavier encourages individuals to donate online, as it is more environmentally friendly and ensures that we get the exact items needed for Thanksgiving meals so there is no inequality in what families receive. To donate online, visit http://yougivegoods.com/xavier by next Friday, November 11. Students and their families should be sure to click “Shop” next to their homerooms. To donate during our in-school drive (which runs through November 18), click here for the list of items.
To further support our efforts to feed New York City families in need, Xavier will host a dress down day tomorrow, November 4. The cost will be $3 or three items from the Thanksgiving drive list.
We thank our community in advance for embracing the spirit of the Great Ignatian Challenge, named for St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, who taught us that “Love is shown more in deeds than in words.”
