Jesuits Elect New Superior General
Xavier High School joins with all Jesuit works in congratulating Arturo Sosa Abascal, S.J., who was elected the 31st Superior General of the Society of Jesus on October 14 in Rome. Fr. Sosa, a member of the Venezuelan Province, is the first Latin American to lead the Society, the largest religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church.
Fr. Sosa most recently served as Delegate of the General for the International Houses and Works of the Society of Jesus in Rome. He was elected by 212 Jesuit electors at the General Congregation, the supreme governing body of the Society, which is currently being held at the Jesuit Curia, the Society’s headquarters in Rome. He succeeds Father Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., 80, who resigned in early October after serving as Superior General since 2008.
