Senior Cadets Mark Memorial Day

Senior cadets volunteered to participate in the Regiment’s annual visit to Washington, D.C., over Memorial Day weekend. There, they experienced the essence of our ongoing experiment with representative democracy. Karl Schneider ’70 once again graciously offered to speak with Xavier seniors at the Pentagon, where he serves as the highest-ranking civil service policymaker on critical (and often thorny) Army personnel issues.

“The trip was truly patriotic and inspirational,” said Eric Idelfonso '16. “From paying our respects to the fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery, to trotting up steep hills and winding roads to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it was a memorable experience. This trip to our nation's capital inspired me to become innovative in achieving a greater future for the generations to come.”

Another highlight of the weekend was our presence at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as our Commander in Chief, President Obama, laid the ceremonial wreath and then prayed at the soldier's grave in Arlington National Cemetery.

“From going inside the Pentagon, to seeing the President of the United States, our trip was filled with exciting adventures,” said Kevin Casano '16. “One of the highlights from this trip was seeing the patriotism throughout Washington, D.C, for Memorial Day. Seeing both active and retired soldiers all over our nation's capital made me truly appreciate the sacrifices they made for our freedom. This experience would have not been possible if it weren't for LTC Campbell. He helped us create one more lasting Xavier memory before we graduate.”
