This Week in Sports
From Dyker Beach Golf Club to the Rugby Athletic Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, it has been a remarkable year in sports.
Join the Xavier community in celebrating the achievements of our spring sports teams.
Baseball:
After being defeated by several highly regarded teams at the beginning of the season, Coach Richard Duffell’s team rallied to win four of their next five games. The Knights fought hard through a season riddled with injuries and inclement weather.
Golf:
2012 Block X Golf Award winner and head coach Jack Johnson ’12 led the golf team to a 10-3 record, defeating Xaverian, Farrell, St. Joseph by the Sea, and Saint Francis Prep. The Knights lost a close match to Archbishop Stepinac in the semifinals.
Lacrosse:
Coach Patrick Drennan’s team finished 11-4, advancing to the conference semifinals. The Knights lost a hard-fought match to a strong Xaverian squad, 6-5. The rising seniors look to build upon their success in 2017.
Rugby:
Xavier Rugby marked its 40th anniversary at a spirited celebration attended by more than 300 alumni, family, and friends on March 11. The team formerly known as the Outlaws came in third place at Nationals.
“Xavier is probably our team of the Boys High School Rugby National Championships,” said rugby reporter Alex Goff. “Not saying they were the best, but more that it seemed they got the most out of their group as a group. They aren't blow-you-away athletes (they'd be the first to admit that), and yet they battled and beat much bigger and supposedly better teams in St. Edward and Penn, and as we said, were this close to tying Gonzaga. As the sum of their parts, they impressed us the most.”
The Knights travel to Utica on Saturday to compete for another state championship.
Track and Field:
At the CHSAA Intersectionals on Saturday, May 28, the 4 X 100 relay team took the silver medal in 42.85 and will join Matt Baker '16 at the Federation Championships in Syracuse. Baker won the triple jump with a school record 47'8", Christian Raslowsky '16 took the silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase, J.C. Rice '15, now at the University of Texas, returned to Icahn and won the alumni mile, and Evan Bernstein '04 ran a PR in the Coaches Relay.
Tennis:
The young team, coached by Mike Mule ’04, fought through growing pains. They look forward to building upon the lessons they learned this season in 2017.
