Students Honored at Block X Awards
By Nick Byrne '11
The outstanding achievements of Xavier’s student body were publicly recognized at Tuesday’s Block X Awards, held in the gym. Since 1941, the storied awards have honored Xavier student contributions to campus life.
From the Photography Club, to the golf team, to overall honors, the Block X Awards commend Sons of Xavier for going the extra mile.
The Rev. Edward J. Spinello, S.J. Award for Co-Curricular Activities is named for a Jesuit who, throughout his years at Xavier, encouraged students to participate in as many activities as they could.
“To be quite honest, if you asked me four years ago if I would be receiving an award for engaging in my school community, I certainly wouldn’t believe you,” Francis Rayos Del Sol ’16 said in his acceptance speech. “But I would like to think that engaging myself was the most important aspect of my Xavier career.”
The Bernard M. Moynahan Award for Scholar Athlete is named for a man who realized that happiness depends on the complete exercise of one’s talents—academic, physical, and spiritual—for the good of one’s classmates and family, and for the service of God.
Moynahan Award winner Christian Raslowsky ’16 emphasized the importance of being a student first.
“I was a student first before I was an athlete,” Raslowsky said. “While I put equal effort in both endeavors, and pushed myself as both a student and as an athlete, my success on the track and on the basketball court was a direct result of my success in the classroom. I was able to work hard and really focus on my athletics only because I saw success in the classroom due to the motivation given to me by my parents and my friends.”
