This Week in Sports

By Nick Byrne '11

It has been a busy week in sports, on and off the field. From Ireland to 16th Street, spring sports are in full swing.

Track and Field:

Xavier is proud to announce that after 23 seasons as head track coach, leading Xavier’s track program to an unprecedented five consecutive New York Federation Cross Country Championships, Coach Pat Dormer P'17 will be inducted into the Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame at the 31st Annual Monsignor Peters-Bernie Gallagher Golf Outing and Hall of Fame Dinner on May 5, 2016. Coach Dormer, who in 2015 led Xavier to its highest New York State finish ever, will be joined by five other CHSAA inductees. Join Xavier in congratulating Coach Dormer on this well-deserved honor.

Rugby:

On Wednesday, March 23, 42 Xavier ruggers traveled from 16th Street to the Emerald Isle for their annual rugby tour.

The A side defeated Presentation Brothers College, 17-10, and Ballinrobe RFC, 29-5.

The B side also defeated Presentation Brothers, 29-24, in the final second of play, and Ballinrobe, 43-15.

Both teams fell to Blackrock College respectively, ending their Irish escape 4-2.

Golf:

Xavier golf is 3-1, with wins over Xaverian, Monsignor Farrell, and St Joseph by the Sea. The team looks to add another win to its record on April 11, against Xaverian.

Lacrosse:

In its second season with varsity status, the lacrosse team is 2-2 (2-0 division). The Knights tied Poly Prep, 6-6, in their first exhibition game and defeated Hunter, 9-7.

In league play, the team defeated St. Raymond and Bishop Laughlin and lost to Cardinal Spellman and Monsignor Farrell, both upper-level teams.
