Athletic Success Draws Hundreds

On Wednesday, February 3, approximately 550 prospective students and parents flooded 16th Street for Xavier’s annual Sports Information Night. They were greeted by a small army of student-athletes and coaches, prepared to answer any question they might have.

The strong attendance at Wednesday night’s event was not surprising. This year has been a great year for Xavier athletics.

After finishing second in the state in cross country, coach Pat Dormer P’17 quickly transitioned to the indoor track season. On January 31, the Knights won their second straight NYCHSAA and city championship.

The varsity hockey team, led by head coach Al DiMauro, is 15-1 going into its final game of the regular season. DiMauro’s Knights are back-to-back CHSHL Division “B” Champions, looking to claim their third straight title.

In his 25th season as head basketball coach, Joe McGrane’s squad has fought its way through a competitive schedule to an 11-7 record. With five games remaining in the regular season, including their homecoming matchup against Fordham Prep on Friday, February 12, McGrane’s Knights look to finish strong going into the playoffs.

History has been made on several fields, in a number of sports this year. The Knights show no sign of slowing down as the Class of 2020 looks to make their high school decisions by March 2.
