Bowlers Advance to City Championship

By Coach Chris McCabe

This season has been an absolutely incredible one for our two bowling teams. After a few key players graduated last year, every player on the team recognized the need to step up and bowl their best in order for us to be successful, and they did.

Varsity gained control of first place in the league early on in the season and never looked back, finishing with a 30-9 record. Senior Connor Mulvena '16, juniors Kyle Leahy '17 and Rob MacPherson '17, and sophomore Clark Sevcik '18 all finished the season with averages over 175, and Leahy had both the highest average in the league at 187 and the second-highest single game in the league at 248.

The JV team, led by juniors Brian Reilly '17, Nicholas Tucker '17, and Nicholas Kane '17, slowly climbed the rankings and, in an incredible upset in the last match of the regular season, stole first place away from Salesian to finish 29-10.

In the Archdiocesan playoffs, both Varsity and JV made easy work of their opponents in the semifinals (Salesian and Fordham Prep, respectively). Unfortunately, both teams took tough losses in the championship match this past Monday in some of the closest and most intense games we've seen over the past few seasons (Varsity to Stepinac and JV to Salesian).

Overall, it was a tough way to end the playoffs for our bowlers, but I'm immensely proud of each one of them and the work they've done this season. And it's not over yet!

As second place in the Archdiocese of New York, both teams go on to compete in the CHSAA City Championships in January against the top teams from Brooklyn and Queens, so our bowlers are already back to work preparing for one more shot at the title.
