Jesuit Profiles: The Martyrs of El Salvador

This week, our series about influential Jesuit saints, prophets, and witnesses returns to the Xavier E-News. Drawn from the book All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time, each story in the monthly series delves into the life and experiences of carefully selected Jesuits.

Twenty-six years ago this week, Ignacio Ellacuría, S.J., Ignacio Martín-Baró, S.J., Segundo Montes, S.J., Juan Ramón Moreno, S.J., Joaquín López y López, S.J., Amando López, S.J., Elba Ramos, and Celina Ramos were murdered at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador. The Jesuit martyrs and their companions live on in the Ignatian Solidarity Network, the annual Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice, and in the way Jesuit institutions across the United States and around the world have recommitted themselves to justice.
