Jesuit Profiles: St. Isaac Jogues, S.J.

This week, our series about influential Jesuit saints, prophets, and witnesses returns to the Xavier E-News. Drawn from the book All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time, each story in the monthly series delves into the life and experiences of a carefully selected Jesuit. We study the legacy of St. Isaac Jogues, S.J., a 17th century Jesuit and North American martyr who is now memorialized on a stained glass window in the Xavier Student Chapel.

Born in France in 1607, Isaac Jogues was ordained in 1636 and sent to New France (Canada) to be a missionary to the native people there. In 1642, he was captured by Mohawks and brutalized, but he survived and made his way back to France, where he became a national celebrity. At the first opportunity, he asked to return to Canada, where he was martyred in 1646.
