Jamel Robinson '97 Takes the Art World
Jamel Robinson ’97 finds himself in a reflective mood as he looks forward to the latest exhibition of his work. A seasoned poet who honed his craft in Xavier English classes taught by Mike Tolkin ’85, he is now a young power player in the New York art world, having taught himself to paint just four years ago. In true Xavier fashion, he says his newfound fame is merely a way through which he works for the greater glory of God.
“Art is the other language I use to express myself,” said Mr. Robinson. “But my belief in God changed my life and the course of my work. God put me in these spots, and I just walked the walk.”
Mr. Robinson has accomplished much in the four short years since he began to paint. Soon after receiving a call from his college girlfriend, who told him her grandmother had just died, he felt inspired to express himself in a new way. He began to paint, and within weeks, the walls of his Harlem apartment were covered with his creations. Shortly thereafter, people wanted to buy his work.
As the art world began to take notice, Mr. Robinson rededicated himself to his community. He continues to teach art to youth in recovery, and he recently reconnected with his Xavier roots.
“Even being here is inspiring,” he said during a visit to 16th Street. “This is where I came from. Xavier is integral. I always mention Xavier. Academically and socially, the tools that you get walking through these doors stay with you.”
“CURRENT,” Mr. Robinson’s latest show, opens October 8 at NOVOConnect on 49 Bleeker Street (at the corner of Bleeker and Lafayette). A reception and artist talk will take place that night from 7-10 p.m. All members of the Xavier community are invited to attend.
