Sports Column: An Update on the Rugby World Cup
By Nick Byrne '11
When Japan lost to New Zealand 145-17 in the 1995 World Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa, former manager Shiggy Konno explained that his team was always in pursuit.
After pulling off arguably the biggest upset in World Cup history last Saturday, rugby fans are wondering if the Brave Blossoms are now being pursued. But what does this mean for Mike Tolkin ’85 and his Eagles, who lost to Samoa 25-16 on Sunday?
USA Rugby has historically had a dismal showing in the World Cup, winning only three games in their six tournaments to date. Their most recent win was in 2011 against Russia, who failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup. The other two came against Japan.
The Eagles have won 13 of 22 test matches against Japan, giving them the upper hand going into pool play. If the Eagles hope to make it out of pool play, they will have to defeat the team that is now being referred to as “The Giant Killers.” But first, the team will have an opportunity to wreak a little havoc against Scotland on Sunday, September 27, and South Africa on Wednesday, September 30.
Good luck to Mike Tolkin ’85, Mike Petri ’02, and Seamus Kelly ’09 in their upcoming matches. For more Rugby World Cup news and information visit www.clifordchancerugby.com/the-tournament.
