Sports Column: Xavier Football Preview

By Nick Byrne '11

The start of the 2015 football season is upon us as the Xavier Knights travel to the Bronx to take on the Mount Saint Michael Academy Mountaineers this Saturday, September 12. The Knights have defeated the Mountaineers in each of their last three meetings.

Last fall, running back Mike Chiarovano '16 led the Knights with 23 carries, 111 yards, and the team’s two offensive touchdowns. Chiarovano returns to Xavier as a senior captain as the team hunts for a win on opening day. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. at the Mount. The varsity Knights will host their first home game at Aviator Field next Saturday, September 19, when they take on St. John the Baptist.

The JV football team opens their season Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Boys High School in Staten Island. Freshmen travel to Fordham Prep the same day to compete in a 5-way scrimmage at 8:30 a.m.

Note: This is the first in a series of regular sports columns from Mr. Byrne, who serves as Xavier's Communications and Alumni Relations Alumni Volunteer. He is an assistant coach for the varsity football team.
