Faces of Xavier: New Faculty and Staff

A talented, energetic new crop of faculty, staff, and alumni volunteers joined us at Xavier this academic year. Please welcome them to 16th Street.

Faculty and Staff
Joining us at the switchboard is Carmela Barbieri P'10 (not pictured above), who has long been acquainted with Xavier—she is the wife of Michael Barbieri ’80 P'10 and mother of Peter Barbieri ’10, last year’s Advancement Alumni Volunteer. She previously worked at Our Lady of Pompeii School and St. Brigid School. “It’s a great fit, and I love everyone here,” Mrs. Barbieri said. “It’s like a family.”

Math and science teacher Julie Foglietta earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Fordham University, where she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in adolescent math education. She previously taught math at Pelham Memorial High School. “Going to a Jesuit university really opened my eyes to the value of a Jesuit education. When I decided that I wanted to become a teacher, I immediately began looking at the possibilities of Jesuit schools I could teach at. Xavier was at the top of my list after reading about the school, speaking to parents of children at the school, and visiting the school,” Ms. Foglietta said. “I couldn't be more blessed. The opportunity to work at a place like Xavier is truly special.”

Stephen Haller ’05 is thrilled to return to 16th Street as a history teacher. “As a graduate of the class of 2005, I wanted to join the great teachers and staff who taught me,” he said. Now in his sixth year as an educator, he most recently worked at the Notre Dame School of Manhattan. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from St. Joseph’s University and a master’s degree in history from St. John’s University, where he is now pursuing a doctorate in the same subject.

Dean of Students Kevin Jacobsen comes to Xavier from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He spent eight years at the Jesuit high school, where he worked in the Dean of Students’ office in addition to teaching history and English and coaching football and rugby. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from Tulane University and a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from The George Washington University. “I came to Xavier because of its reputation, and the opportunity was overwhelming,” Mr. Jacobsen said. “To have a leadership position in a school of this magnitude is what I have always wanted. I look forward to bringing my absolute best to Xavier every day.”

Math teacher Kristin Mann may look familiar to Xavier students—she is the sister of our own Kelly (Quigley) Morenzoni! Now in her seventh year as an educator, Ms. Mann is happy to return to the classroom after spending two years at home with her daughter, Sophia. She is a graduate of St. John’s University, where she studied adolescent education.

Director of Alumni Relations Zane Massey ‘96, our featured Face of Xavier last week, attended Clark Atlanta University and earned his MBA at Fordham University. He comes to Xavier after spending many years in the corporate world, and he is already hard at work engaging more than 11,000 living alumni in Xavier’s mission.

Campus Minister James Stayton earned his bachelor’s degree in music (choral conducting and vocal pedagogy) and master’s degree in music (composition and music theory) from Florida Atlantic University. This is his 20th year as an educator, having taught music and theology to students from pre-kindergarten through college. He most recently worked at the Newark Boys Chorus School as the associate music director, music theory teacher, and faculty advancement coordinator. “I came to Xavier for the opportunity to participate in a prestigious, academic, Ignatian community of faith. Playing a part in the formation of young men for others as well as the opportunity to grow in my own faith brought me here,” he said.

Normandy Villa comes to 16th Street as a leave replacement for Mike Petri '02, who is away this semester playing for the USA Rugby World Cup team. Mr. Villa is a graduate of Regis High School, Harvard University, and Columbia University, where he earned an MPH. “I came to Xavier because of its Jesuit commitment to the holistic development of students.”

Alumni Volunteers
Nick Byrne ’11 returns to Xavier as the Communications and Alumni Relations Alumni Volunteer. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. “Xavier played a pivotal role in my physical, spiritual, and intellectual development,” said Mr. Byrne, who was a member of the 2010 Xavier High School rugby national championship team. “I jumped at the offer to return to 16th Street after graduating from Alabama.”

Admissions Alumni Volunteer Sean Lee ’11 returns to Xavier from the University of Oregon, where he studied history and political science. “I returned to Xavier as an alumni volunteer because it was a place that I had so many incredible experiences, and I felt obligated to give back to Xavier."

Greg Stelzer ’11 returns to 16th Street as the Campus Ministry Alumni Volunteer. He graduated from Fordham University, where he studied classical languages and English, earlier this year. He was involved in Campus Ministry at both Xavier and Fordham, and he previously worked at the Guggenheim Museum as an intern. “What brought me back to Xavier was wanting to reconnect with the Xavier community and gain professional experience at a place that had such a positive impact on me,” he said. “It feels great to be back on 16th Street!”
