Block X, JROTC Awards Honor Students

The outstanding achievements of Xavier’s student body were publicly recognized at Tuesday’s Block X Awards, held in the gym. Harking back to 1941, when the first Block X ceremony was held after the football season, the storied awards honor Xavier student contributions to campus life.

As she welcomed the standing-room only crowd, Director of Student Activities Johanna Tanzman stressed that the awards celebrate all students. “Today the spotlight is on a few, but please know that this is a celebration of all of you who have added so much life to this community through the expression of your talents and the love of what you do,” Ms. Tanzman said.

Awards marked contributions to a range of areas, from the Medical Science Club to the tennis team to overall honors like the Rev. Edward Spinello, S.J., Award (named for a Jesuit who encouraged students to participate in as many activities as possible) to the Bernard M. Moynahan '30 Award (named for a man who urged the complete exercise of one’s talents). Daniel McLaren ’15, who will matriculate at the University of South Carolina, won the Spinello Award, while Charlie Lambert ’15 took home the Moynahan Award.

“Coming to Xavier was the best decision I ever made, and getting involved outside of the classroom helped it make it so,” Lambert said in his acceptance speech. He urged underclassmen to “join a sport, or club, or activity.” Lambert will attend the University of Virginia with a track and field scholarship this fall.

Later that evening, the JROTC Awards honored members of the Xavier Regiment for their outstanding accomplishments during the 2014-15 year. In addition to individual awards, the drill team’s performance at the Tri-Service Nationals, the rifle team’s triumph at the Brigade Championships, and the Raider Unit’s superb showing at the Raider National Championship were also commended.
