Harriers Compete at Penn Relays
A great Xavier track tradition continued last weekend as qualifying team members competed against an international field at the Penn Relays.
“All three relays run were very competitive races,” said track coach Patrick Dormer P’17. The 4x100-meter relay team of Joe Onah ’15, Sam Santos-Shevett ’15, Kurt Tulud ’15, and Joe Santangelo ’15 started the action April 24 with a strong 45:17 posting. The distance medley relay came next, with Christian Raslowsky ’16, Oliver Moe ’15, Hank Camacho ’15, and John Rice ’15 earning a great 10:27 result.
On Saturday, April 25, the 4x400-meter relay team of Charlie Lambert ’15, Stephen Sgarlato ’15, Andrew Kiarie-Mumbi ’17, and Oliver Moe ’15 claimed third-place medals with a 3:24 posting. “This was the fastest time run by a CHSAA team at the Penn Relays,” Dormer noted.
Another stellar result was posted by Lambert, who placed seventh in the long jump in a highly competitive field. “It was a tremendous showing by the Knights. All the relays and Lambert faced international competition," Dormer said.
In recent weeks, various alumni who once participated in the Relays have offered memories. Frank O’Brien ’66, who took third place in the mile relay with classmates Walt Giraldi ’65, Mark Sinibaldi ’65, and Dave Weber ’65 50 years ago at the 1965 Relays (and still has an article from the June 3, 1965, issue of The Review to prove it!), reminisced about the event at Xavier’s Boston Reception on April 21. He shared his memories during an interview with the E-News, and he continues to follow the Xavier track team when time allows.
“I went back to the Relays a couple of times in the ’90s for the heck of it,” said O’Brien, who has attended track alumni events in the past and streamed the Penn Relays online last weekend. “I still have a warm spot in my heart for the Xavier track team.”
