Xavier for Xavier: Students Support Brother School in Micronesia

On 16th Street, efforts continue to support Micronesia’s Xavier High School as it recovers from Super Typhoon Maysak.

With sustained winds of 160 mph, Maysak struck the Pacific in late March, unleashing destruction across its path. Xavier High School, located in the Chuuk state of Micronesia, suffered an estimated $50,000-$100,000 in damages. On 16th Street, the Student Council has led efforts to collect funds and supplies for our brother school during its time of need.

“Every year we donate to our brother school in Chuuk, so we would normally hold a dress down day in May for them,” said Student Council moderator and math teacher Alicia Psillos. “However, over Easter break Mr. LiVigni contacted me with the news of the horrible typhoon.” Members of the Student Council immediately decided to move the Xavier Chuuk dress down day to Friday, April 17. That effort alone raised approximately $3,300 for typhoon relief, and Student Council members have continued to host homeroom collections for a week and a half to collect even more. “We would like to give as much support as we can,” Ms. Psillos said.

Jesuits from the former New York Province of the Society of Jesus founded Xavier Chuuk, which remains a work of the USA Northeast Province. The province, which includes eight states in our region and stretches to Jamaica, Jordan, and Micronesia, has also been working to coordinate support for Xavier Chuuk.
