Jesuit Profiles: Fr. Karl Rahner, S.J.
This week, our series about influential Jesuit saints, prophets, and witnesses returns to the Xavier E-News. Drawn from the book All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time, each story in the monthly series delves into the life and experiences of a carefully selected Jesuit. This month, we study the legacy of Karl Rahner, arguably the foremost Catholic theologian of the 20th century.
Born in Freiburg, Germany, in 1904, Fr. Rahner was a prolific essayist whose substantial work composes more than twenty volumes of his Theological Investigations. Pope John XXIII named Rahner a theological expert to serve at the Second Vatican Council, where he contributed to commissions that reformed and renewed the Catholic Church.
