A Proud Tradition: Xavier at the St. Patrick's Day Parade
Following a path trodden by generations of Sons of Xavier, members of the Xavier Regiment marched up Fifth Avenue during the 2015 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17.
Led by Cadet Colonel Kevin Moncrief ’15, the Regiment proudly represented Xavier High School. The cadets were joined by Xavier President Jack Raslowsky, Headmaster Michael LiVigni, members of the Blue Night Band, and alumni as they took part in America's oldest, proudest Irish tradition.
“The alumni enjoy supporting the Regiment,” said Moncrief. “I really like seeing them there.” In addition to the alumni who marched behind the Regiment, various other Sons of Xavier participated in the parade, including Frank Comerford ’73, who served as Grand Marshal in 2012.
Many senior cadets said participating in this year’s parade was bittersweet. “It was surreal. I didn’t realize until we got to 79th Street and took that right for the last time that we were never going to do that again,” said Harry Hom ’15. “It was special—a little more memorable than the other years.”
Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Witold Dziekan ’15 echoed that sentiment. “It was kind of sad that it was our last parade, but the weather was great, and that made the parade very enjoyable.”
“The Regiment received compliments from parents and alumni for the flash and brilliance of the X Squad, the Saber Guard, the Rifle Team, the Raider Team, and First and Second Battalions,” said Lt. Col. Roy Campbell (USA, Ret.), Xavier’s Senior Army Instructor. “The Regiment brought smiles to many faces—adults and children alike— watching from the sidelines. This was a wonderful day to honor St. Patrick, the Enlightener of Ireland.”
