Remembering Cardinal Egan

Xavier President Jack Raslowsky, Vice President Dan Dougherty, Rev. Joseph Marina, S.J., pastor of the Church of St. Francis Xavier, and Rev. Peter Fink, S.J., associate pastor, represented the greater Xavier community at the funeral of Cardinal Edward Egan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on March 10.

Among the Sons of Xavier who paid their respects at the service were Deacon Frank Orlando ’67, who assisted with the funeral Mass, and Fr. Andrew King '86, Master of Ceremonies for the Cathedral.

“It was an honor to represent Xavier at Cardinal Egan's funeral,” Mr. Raslowsky said. “He led the Archdiocese through some difficult times and was always a great friend of the Society of Jesus. He had a deep and abiding affection for his own Jesuit education. The Cardinal’s funeral was a reminder of Xavier's deep connection to the larger church in New York and all her works.”

Cardinal Egan, archbishop emeritus, 12th bishop, ninth archbishop, and seventh Cardinal of the See of New York, died on March 5 at age 82. He was appointed Archbishop of New York in 2000 and made a cardinal in 2001, the year he helped steer a shaken city through the dark days following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Under Cardinal Egan’s leadership, the number of registered parishioners in the Archdiocese increased and enrollment in Catholic elementary and secondary schools grew. He retired as Archbishop in 2009, at age 77.
