Track & Field Wins State Title

For the first time in the 87-year history of the CHSAA Intersectional Track & Field Championship, the Xavier track & field team won the state title on Sunday, February 8.

The Knights also took home two individual titles as well as a relay gold. Charlie Lambert ’15 tied the league long jump record with 24’6” (second-best in the United States), earning the meet’s co-MVP honors. John Rice ’15 took home the state 1600-meter title, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Oliver Moe ’15, Frank Clarke ’15, Charlie Lambert ’15, and Andrew Kiarie-Mumbi ’17 also won gold.

"The team was able to bring the Joe Fox Memorial Award home to 16th Street with a balanced attack that saw them score in 10 of the 15 events," track & field coach Mr. Patrick Dormer told the E-News. "All told, more than 20 Knights scored, with nine earning a trip to Cornell for the state federation championship. The team never faltered in their determination to bring home the title. Down 2.5 points with three events left, the relays were able to ensure the victory."

“I am so proud of the hard work and effort our team demonstrated this year," Mr. Dormer said. "This championship is one that we will be able to share with all the guys who have been on the team over the years. Mrs. Scott (wife of longtime track & field coach and teacher Mr. Jim Scott) was so happy when I called her Sunday night to share the news."

Look out for the upcoming edition of Xavier Magazine to read more about John Rice, the University of Texas-bound senior who will run track for the Longhorns this fall. For other updates and results from Xavier Athletics, visit our website.
