Jesuit Profiles: Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J.
This week, our series about influential Jesuit saints, prophets, and witnesses returns to the Xavier E-News. Drawn from the book All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time, each story in the monthly series delves into the life and experiences of a carefully selected Jesuit. This month, we study the legacy of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., former Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
Born in the Basque region of Spain in 1907, Fr. Arrupe oversaw a renewal of the Jesuits so profound that he became known by many as the Society’s “second founder.” After his election as superior general in 1965, his commitment to a “faith that does justice” pervaded the Society—and was occasionally the source of controversy.
