Mike Fernandez '72 Publishes Memoir
Accomplished alumnus Mike Fernandez ’72 can now add another title to his list of achievements—successful author.
Xavier President Jack Raslowsky traveled to Miami for the launch of Fernandez’s memoir, Humbled by the Journey: Lessons for My Family and Yours, and was joined by Rodger Shay ’54 and Rudy Cecchi ’69 at Miami Dade College on January 14 for a conversation between Mike and his friend and business partner, NBA legend Magic Johnson.
“The launch of Humbled by the Journey was a terrific event with nearly 800 people in attendance. It was a delight to share in the event with Mike’s family and friends and members of the greater Miami community, including former Miami Heat star Ray Allen, a 10-time All-Star and the NBA's all-time three-point scorer," Raslowsky noted. "Mike and Magic Johnson really were a dynamic duo. Their reflections on life and love, success and failure, and learning on life’s journey were engaging and heartfelt.”
Upon reading Humbled by the Journey, Xavier’s Board Chair John Meditz ’66 commented, “The book is really outstanding. Mike has lived a wonderful life, and there are great lessons for us all in his journey.”
Humbled by the Journey takes readers on Fernandez’s own life path, from his childhood in Cuba and New York to his 508-mile pilgrimage along El Camino de Santiago in Spain, during which he raised awareness—and millions—for Miami Children’s Hospital.
A noted philanthropist, Fernandez is the founder of MBF Healthcare Partners, a private equity firm that invests in healthcare service companies nationwide. He gives generously to causes focused on healthcare, education, and those most in need. All proceeds from the sale of Humbled by the Journey will benefit The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, a nonprofit in Miami-Dade County, Florida, that focuses on early childhood education, development initiatives, and school readiness.
