This Week in Sports

Xavier’s athletes met with success this week, from bowling to wrestling. Good luck to our JV bowlers this evening at the city championship, to our varsity swimmers as they travel to Houston, and to the rest of our teams in their upcoming games this week. As always, please visit the Xavier Athletics site for the most complete, up-to-date information.

Bowling

In its first city championship match Monday, the JV team defeated St. Francis Prep, 2-1. The team competes for the championship tonight. Go Knights!

Hockey
Last week, JV hockey defeated Fieldston, 5-3, while varsity hockey bested St. Edmund’s 7-5 and Columbia Prep 4-2. Over the two games, Brian Ostrander ’16 netted a hat trick against St. Edmund’s and scored a few more goals against Columbia Prep; Tyler D’Agostino ’15 scored and assisted three times against Columbia; and Dario Mazinulich '16 and Joey Pisano ’18 played well in net.

Swimming
In a 99-79 loss to St. Anthony’s, Conor Mullin ’17 qualified to swim the 100 butterfly at the state championships this March in Ithaca. Xavier also won a close, hard-fought victory over Xaverian, winning 92.5 – 90.5. The team looks forward to traveling to Houston, Texas, this weekend to compete against Strake Jesuit Prep and Lamar High School. This will be the second time the Knights have traveled to face the Houston schools, the first time being in 2013.

Track
At the Hispanic Games, John Rice ’15 took fourth place in the invitational mile. With a time of 4:13.1, he improved his previous Xavier record for the race by more than ten seconds—and now counts among the fastest milers in the country. Charlie Lambert ’15, Matt Baker ’16, and Oliver Moe ‘15 are also ranked in the top 25 nationally for their best events. At the NYCHSAA Sophomore Championships, Giancarlo Cipri ’17 was named the meet MVP after taking first place in both the 3200 and 1600-meter runs. At the Milrose Trials on January 14, both the varsity 4x80 and 4x200 teams qualified for the prestigious Milrose Games on February 14.

Wrestling
Wrestling has completed league play with a 3-2 record and a fourth place ranking. The team is scheduled to wrestle their playoff matches this Saturday at Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains. Individually, Dylan Ebanks ’17 continues to shine; he leads the team in individual victories and is one of the top wrestlers in his weight class in New York City. The rest of the team plans to make a statement at the February 7 Divisional Tournament at Iona Prep. If they take one of the top six places for their weight class, they will qualify for the CHSAA State Tournament on February 14.
