Skiing & Snowboarding Club Hits the Vermont Slopes
Thirty-nine Xavier students ventured to Vermont’s Okemo Mountain Resort last weekend with the Skiing and Snowboarding Club, honing their athleticism and bonding with classmates and adults alike.
Six energetic chaperones accompanied club members on the journey—Skiing and Snowboarding Club moderator Ms. Mary-Grace Gannon, LTC Roy Campbell (the only snowboarder among the chaperones), Mr. Jozeph Herceg, Mr. Steven Iannuccilli, Mrs. Jennifer Kennedy-Orlando, and Mr. Alex Lavy. The group departed for Vermont on Friday afternoon, January 9, and experienced great snow on the slopes through Sunday, January 11.
Throughout the year, the Skiing and Snowboarding Club encourages a love of both sports with instructional videos and hands-on experience. Newcomers are welcome and benefit greatly from classes during the club’s trips. Ms. Gannon said one faculty member and several students (including a brand-new skier and a new snowboarder) attended classes at Okemo, and it was rewarding to see how dramatically their skills improved over the weekend. In addition to the educational aspects of the trip, Ms. Gannon said students enjoyed culinary delights as well—namely, the ski-in/ski-out Waffle House on the slopes and the pit stops at McDonald’s during the five-hour journeys to and from Okemo.
The club has another trip planned to Gore Mountain, just north of Albany in the Adirondacks, from January 30-February 1. There are still spots available for the trip. Interested students should email Ms. Gannon or visit 4C3 to pick up a registration form.
