Medical Science Club Hosts John Muller, M.D. '75
On Thursday, November 13, the Medical Science Club hosted John Muller, M.D. ’75, Xavier alumnus and practicing anesthesiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His visit was organized by guidance counselor and club moderator Ms. Laura Amigone. Dr. Muller '75 spoke about his educational and professional experience and the steps he felt were crucial for his success.
Dr. Muller '75, a history and economics double major at Cornell University, stressed the importance of pursuing subjects of interest in college, saying, “Do what you like and follow what you are interested in. From there, you will be able to learn what you love and pursue a career that you love.” He also placed an emphasis on learning how to write and think properly, skills he gained from his time at Xavier High School, which he commented have been very useful in patient care and communication.
Dr. Muller concluded his presentation by offering advice to all club members on how to best prepare themselves for college, medical school, and the medical profession. He recommended that they should pursue volunteer work with patients, because it "provides a good foundation and insight into the medical field and increases one’s ability to empathize with others," which Dr. Muller has found to be essential in his career as an anesthesiologist.
Dr. Muller's presentation was invaluable to the members of the Medical Science Club and the wider Xavier community. The Medical Science Club plans to bring in more alumni doctors and researchers later on in the year. Please visit the Xavier website for more information and updates!
