Ignatian Scholars Take Veterans Day Trip to New York Historical Society

On Veterans Day, the Ignatian Scholars attended a class at the New York Historical Society entitled “New York and the Civil War.” Mr. Patrick Mahon ’04, Director of the Ignatian Scholars Program, gave a brief description of the event: “Accompanied by myself, Mr. Luciano Lovallo and several parents, the students were given the opportunity to study this time period through various forms of artwork, weaponry, and other artifacts of the time.” The exhibit explored the ramifications of the Civil War, including the legality of secession, the dichotomy of federal and state rights, and how it was perceived by the average New Yorker. In addition, Mr. Mahon said, “As it was Veterans Day, a particular emphasis was placed on understanding the experience of the average soldier, both Union and Confederate.” Students engaged with the wide variety of material offered and actively participated in the lesson.

This was the Ignatian Scholars’ first field trip of the year, a year in which the program’s curriculum includes several mandatory field trips and alumni discussion panels. The purpose of this expansion was to further develop a continued love of extracurricular learning.

The Ignatian Scholars Program will have several other field trips throughout the year. Wherever the Ignatian Scholars may go next, several things can be expected: they will have a good time and enjoy what they do with each other, enriched in some capacity, and develop a greater understanding of the world and communities in which they live.
