Cross-Country Team Starts Season with a Bang
By Michael Batten '10

The cross-country team began their season in full force this past weekend, racing in three meets over three days.

On Saturday, September 20, the varsity and J.V. "A" team traveled to Warwick for the 5K race at the 13th annual Wave Mania Cross Country Festival.

The varsity seven came in 2nd place out of 14 teams. Senior John Rice ’15 won the race in commanding fashion with a time of 15:23.99.The team is currently ranked 8th in New York State.

The J.V. "A" team also had success, coming in 4th place out of 15 teams, with strong performances by seniors Garrison Schwer ’15 and Henry Camacho ’15, who came in 5th and 8th place respectively.

The rest of the team competed against Jesuit rivals on Saturday at the Regis Invitational, held on the infamous cowpaths of Van Cortlandt Park. All ran well, particularly freshman Raphael Oettl ’18, who ran the 5th best time in Xavier freshman history for the 1.5 mile course at 8:37.23

On Monday, September 22, the entire team competed in the 22nd Jim Scott Challenge at Fordham Prep, in memory of longtime Xavier teacher and coach, Jim Scott. The varsity squad took the title in the two mile race for the fourth year in a row, beating out Jesuit rivals Regis and Fordham Prep. Since varsity beat the Fordham Rams by only one point, 28-29, it was truly a team effort, their win required the help of all seven runners. John Rice, Christian Raslowsky '16, Dominick Ronan '16, Giancarlo Cipri '17, Louis Vazquez '15, Ben Karam '16, and Garrison Schwer displayed a great team mentality and kept the Jim Scott trophy where it belongs, at Xavier.

The J.V. and freshman team also won their respective team titles for the one mile, during which Frank Clarke ’15 and Raphael Oettl set meet records. Other noteworthy J.V. performances include Henry Camacho and William Hatheway '15, both of whom broke the five-minute mile barrier, and some of the most notable freshman races were ran by Raphael Oettl, Michael Crorkin '18, Aidan Donahue '18, and Jerardo Perez '18.
