Xavier Alumni Volunteers Return to 16th Street

In its third year, the Xavier Alumni Volunteer Program has engaged four volunteers who are eager to return and give back to the Xavier community.

Peter Barbieri ’10 looks forward to giving back to Xavier and gaining valuable professional experience this year. Peter attended Fairfield University, where he majored in Communications, minored in Marketing, and continued to reap the rewards of a Jesuit education. In addition to his chosen studies, Peter’s service as the personal relations officer of Fairfield’s Marketing Club shows his value as a volunteer in the Advancement Office. While a Xavier student, Peter played freshman basketball and four years of baseball, where he co-captained the JV team, and he is interested in helping to coach one or more of these teams.

Michael Batten ’10
considers the prospect of contributing to such a great community exhilarating, and he too hopes to refine his professional abilities while working in the Alumni Relations and Communications offices. Michael matriculated to the University of Chicago, where he graduated with general honors with a major in History and a minor in Norwegian Studies. As a Maroon, Michael embarked on a quarter-long study of English literature in London and worked as a lifeguard for the University’s Athletic Department. Commuting from Staten Island as a student, Michael greatly enjoyed participating on the CFX Service Trips and running on the cross-country and track and field teams, and he hopes to help out with both.

Michael Fiore ’10
hopes to become an integral member of the Xavier community, as well as inspire and challenge members of the student body in the same manner that he had done when he attended school on West 16th Street. Currently living in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Michael continued his Jesuit education at Loyola University Maryland, where he majored in English and minored in Secondary Education. A man of sport, Michael competed on Xavier’s baseball and swimming and diving teams, and he continued at Loyola as a member and administrator of the Club Baseball team. He will be working in the Admissions Department

Matthew Hayes ’10
double majored in Liberal Studies and Italian at the University of Notre Dame. At Xavier, Matt exemplified the Jesuit ideal of “men and women for others,” where he assumed leadership roles on the Student Events Committee, the Senior Gift Committee, Kairos, and CFX Maryland. He manifested his desire to serve further at Notre Dame, where he helped out with service trips to Appalachia and with the Student Union Board. For his efforts at Notre Dame, Matthew was honored with the Palumbo Award for service to the Student Union. Matthew currently lives in Rockville Center, and looks forward to helping coach Xavier’s J.V. soccer team and assist in whatever way he can as a volunteer in the Campus Ministry office.
