Outdoor Track Sees Big Finishes at CHSAA State Championship

Hot off their win at the NYCHSAA championship last week, the outdoor track team returned to Icahn Stadium for the biggest meet of their season, the CHSAA Championship. The runners, jumpers and throwers did not disappoint, as they combined for several medals and records on the day.

John Rice ’15, favorited to win the steeplechase, did just that as he managed the hurdles and water pit with an outstanding 9:17.10, more than half a minute better than anyone else in the race. Dennis Barnes ’14, who won last weekend’s city championship in the javelin, took home the state championship for the second time in Xavier history in a nail-biting finale that saw him throw the spear for 161'10.5" for the gold. Charlie Lambert ’15 took second place in the long jump, while Matthew Baker ’16 scored in the triple jump at third place and Joseph Santangelo ’15 placed fifth in the high jump. A young 4x800 team sent in an outstanding result of their own – seeded to run an 8:07 time, the group of William Hatheway ’15, Christian Raslowsky ’16, Dominick Ronan ’16 and Garrison Schwer ’15 came in at 8:00.83 for third place in the event and third place in the all-time Xavier record books.

The team was just barely edged out by Chaminade for third place, but they're more than happy with the big performances they brought. Roughly 40 varsity competitors travel to Iona Prep this Sunday for Eastern State Championships - good luck, boys!
