The sophomores celebrate their first-place win at Intersectionals.

Track Continues Winning Streak at Three-Meet Weekend

The track team scattered all over New York as runners traveled to one of three separate locations to compete at. Here’s a summary of what went down all over the tri-state area.

At the Loucks Games, held at White Plains High School and bringing in all of the best talent from throughout the state, John Rice ’15 wins the steeplechase run with a time of 9:32.06. His performance is ranked #5 in the country, and he’ll only to improve on that as the team moves into its final races of the season. Charlie Lambert ’15 just barely missing qualifying for the 200m dash with a preliminary run of 22.86, but his time gets him third in the Xavier record books. Dennis Barnes ’14 throws the javelin 49.65 meters to place seventh in the event.

At the North Shore Invitational, Garrison Schwer ’15, Joseph Onah ’15, Oliver Moe ’15 and Louis Vazquez ’15 all place in their events, the latter even taking first in his 3200-meter run. The meet serves to keep the runners fresh and on their toes as the team moves into NYCHSAA and CHSAA championships, then Easter State Championships on June 1.

At freshman intersectionals at Farrell, the freshman show promise with an eight place finish, with the help of a gold medal finish from Connor Greene ’17 in the high jump and silver medal finishes from Giancarlo Cipri ’17 in the 2000-meter steeplechase and the boys’ 4x800-meter relay.

The sophomores also had their intersectional meet at Farrell, and fought hard to win the first place spot, beating out track powerhouses like Chaminade, St. Anthony’s and Fordham Prep. Matthew Baker '16 and Stephanos Cocoves ’16 both took first in their jump events, and the 4x400-meter relay of Andrew Kiarie-Mumbi ’16, Jonathan Chin ’16, Sean Archibald ’16 and Ryan Woody ’16 did as well. Other team points were won by Christian Raslowsky ’16 in the 3200-meter run and Dominick Ronan ’16 in the 800-meter run.

The team will compete at the NYCHSAA Varsity & Weight Championships this Saturday at Icahn Stadium at Randall’s Island – races start around 5:00 p.m. and there is plenty of room to watch, so come out and support the Knights!

Varsity Rugby Travels to the National Invitational Tournament

Members of the varsity rugby team travel to Indiana this weekend to compete in the boys’ National Invitational Championships. The team is ranked fourth in the nation, and is competing against other strong programs such as Jesuit High School, Gonzaga, Penn High School of Indiana, and Greenwich, who Xavier recently bested. The teams begin their games on Thursday, and Xavier hopes to take the National Championship game on Saturday. Live streaming of the weekend will be available free at Michiana Video. Good luck, boys!

Both the J.V. and freshman teams continued to see success on the rugby pitch. The J.V. squad faced off against a varsity St. Francis Prep team on Saturday in a New York State league match and won handily, 36-17. The JV squad will close out its season at the Jersey Cup in Morris, NJ this weekend. While the JV played St. Francis, the freshmen were up in Fairport, CT playing against Fairport Prep. They won by 40+ points, and return to Fairport to take on Fairport High School this Saturday.
