Do Magnets Help Plants Grow?

Do magnets help plants grow? As it turns out, yes.

Which are the coldest Xavier water fountains and why? The ones on the first floor, because they're used the most.

Can urine effectively fertilize crops? Maybe, yes.

All these questions were answered by bold Xavier student-scientists at last week's Science Symposium, held in the Xavier Commons. The March 2nd event showcased the work of about 40 students who used the scientific method to explore interesting questions and learned to display their work in a convincing way.

Throughout the day, students presented their work to classmates (see a selection of abstracts here) while a steady flow of visitors viewed the boards set up on tables.

"The presenters worked extremely hard on their projects over the last six months," said Mr. Gregory Norris, of the Xavier science department. "There is a large variety of topics and the students are very proud of their work."

The annual Xavier robotics Botball competition took place immediately after school Friday, and after an intense throwdown, the team of Miscellaneous - Bruce Gonzalez, Derek Gryga, Nicholas Guerrero, and Edward Foti - won the head-to-head round. The Purple Cobras - Francis Sheehan, Paul Amato, Andrew Mignola and Max Kantor - won the Seeding round but lost to Miscellaneous in the final match.
