Xavier High School                                2010

I. Course Goals:

The maintenance and development of good health is basic to all of our lives. Adolescents need accurate health information in order to develop healthy attitudes and behavior patterns. Students are beginning to assume responsibility for their own health. They must

make choices and decisions that may affect them throughout their lives. This class offers

knowledge and skills that enable a student to make choices and decisions based upon accurate and current information about Decision making; Relationships; Personal hygiene; Violence; Nutrition; Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug use and abuse; Sexually transmitted diseases, and First Aid and CPR. The goal of this course is to enable the students to assess their own lifestyles and risks and to choose behaviors that are healthy and responsible.

II. Required Materials:

Every class day you required to have:

·    2 pens, 2 pencils, and loose-leaf paper.

·    notebook devoted to Health.

·    your reading packet provided.

·    a folder devoted only to Health to keep all handouts, returned homework, quizzes, and tests.

·    your Xavier Planner, where you are to copy all homework.

It is your responsibility to have these things for class!

III. Class Rules:

·        If you are late you must get a late slip from the Dean of Students office. You will not be admitted into class without this slip. If you are out of dress code you will be sent to the Dean of Students office to receive a slip. The dress code is specified in your Xavier Planner.

·        You are expected to come to class ready to learn. You are expected to take part effectively in class discussions and in small group discussions.

·        Cheating in any area will result in a zero as well as a meeting with both me and the Dean of Students.

·        If you need to see me, we can set up a time that is best for both of us.

IV. Grading Areas:

·        HOMEWORK: Only written homework handed in on time will receive full credit. It should be done neatly on standard sized loose-leaf paper. In some cases you will be asked to type your work. Written homework will not always be collected. If it is not collected, you should still keep it in your folder with the rest of your work. Absence from school is not an excuse for missing a homework. You have telephone numbers of class members in your Xavier Planner. It could be beneficial to have e-mail addresses from at least 2 other classmates to find out the homework for the next day.

·        QUIZZES: A quiz can be given at any time and will be based on your reading of the material, your notes, and your homework. Sometimes quizzes will be announced before hand. If you are absent for a quiz, it must be made up the first day you return to class.

·        TESTS: Test will be announced approximately one week prior to when they are given. They will be made up of multiple choice, fill-ins, true or false, matching column, short answer, and essay questions. There will be between a minimum of 2 tests given during the semester. If you are absent for a test you must see me your first class day back to schedule a make-up test which be given at my convenience. If you don’t see me I assume you are expecting to receive a zero.

·        CLASS PARTICIPATION: This is very important part of class where all students need to participate for the class to be successful. Your participation can only improve your grade while also allowing the class to run smoothly.

V. Grading Policy:

Grades will be based on the following system:

20%     Quizzes

20%     Written Homework

50%     Tests

10%    Class Participation

You should keep all work handed back to you in your folder. This will allow you to stay organized as well as allowing you to figure out your grade.

Work hard and this will be a very enjoyable semester.
